Description
The Associate Director of Content & Editorial will play a key role in shaping the editorial approach and public voice of CBRC by planning, strategizing, writing, coordinating, and evaluating the organization’s written content in fulfillment of the organization's mandate, strategic priorities, and funded deliverables. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this position oversees the development and execution of high-quality, compelling content across all external channels, including press releases, blog posts, newsletters, social media, website content, and promotional materials for projects, campaigns, and surveys. This role also supports project management within the Communications Team by coordinating timelines, managing content workflows, liaising with internal project teams and external collaborators, and aligning messaging across platforms and initiatives.
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Develops, edits and publishes written content, including blog posts, press releases, campaign materials, and thought leadership pieces, both independently and as requested by the Director of Communications and other relevant staff.
- Collaborates with CBRC’s staff to develop content that translates complex information into accessible, engaging content (such as plain language summaries) relevant to CBRC’s target audiences.
- Works within the Communications team to produce CBRC style guides, ensuring content alignment with the organization’s voice, values, tone, and inclusive language standards.
- Maintains and evolves editorial calendars to produce written outputs for projects, campaigns and CBRC’s activities and priorities.
- Collaborates with Communications team members to follow integrated communications plans, with content distribution through digital spaces (including web, social, and email)
- Coordinates public relations efforts, including press release development, interview facilitation, press communications, and other associated activities.
- Helps to produce creative marketing ideas for CBRC’s initiatives and projects, independently or in collaboration with project team and Director of Communications.
- Works within the Communications team to develop media campaign plans to achieve organizational and Communications objectives.
- Collaborates with Events & Web Manager to ensure content quality and presentation, usability, optimization, and accessibility on CBRC’s website and microsites.
- Supports Communications Coordinator in development and management of social media content calendars, digital promotions, and paid campaigns across social media platforms.
- Oversees and has final approval for the written content for CBRC’s annual Summit conference and other events.
- Develops content about CBRC, separate from project deliverables, to tell the organization’s story, mandate, mission, vision and history to the organization’s diverse audiences.
- Coordinates with French Content Editor to facilitate translation of English content to French language and other languages as needed, with quality and timeliness in mind.
- Undertakes special related projects as requested by Director of Communications.
- Provides supervision to a team of direct reports, including hiring, training, performance management, and other human resources activities.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Health Promotion, or related field.
- Proven leadership or management experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field.
- Proficiency in project and office management software and platforms, including Microsoft Office, G-Suite, Zoom, Asana, or equivalent.
- Understanding of queer and trans health issues and working with people with diverse sexualities and genders.
- Experience working in knowledge translation, health, or science communications, and working with data and research.
- Experience in a supervisory capacity to relevant staffing roles (e.g. writers, editors, communications officers).
- Ability to work in both English at a professional level (written & oral);
- Experience leading a team, including hiring, training, conducting performance evaluation;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills including writing and/or editing documents such as reports, facilitating meetings and training, and managing team communications
- Capacity to multi-task and function under tight and/or competing deadlines;
- Ability to recognize when to take initiative and when to seek guidance;
- Autonomous worker with an ability to adapt and work within a team setting;
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with partners from varying sectors including academic, government and community agencies;
- Demonstrated problem solving skills with the ability to analyze processes and manage competing priorities and activities.
Other Competencies & Qualifications (assets)
- Ability to work in French and additional languages (written and verbal proficiency) is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of 2S/LGBTQIA+ health, current HIV prevention strategies.
- Experience in working with Indigenous and Two-Spirit communities.
