Today is Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Celebration and Awareness Day

Let’s celebrate! Today (Tuesday, March 19) marks the third edition of Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Celebration and Awareness Day, a time to celebrate the radiance and diversity of Two-Spirit identities, expression, and experience. Various activities will be taking place in communities across Turtle Island.

In what is colonially-known as Vancouver, the Two-Spirit Program team at CBRC will present an afternoon of activities at The Junction (1138 Davie Street) today from 1 PM to 6 PM. The celebration will amplify Two-Spirit voices and artists, and will feature an opening ceremony with Coast Salish
Elders and Knowledge Keepers, an open dialogue session, interviews, live entertainment and drag performances by local Indigenous artists. Everyone is welcome.

Today has also been proclaimed as Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Celebration and Awareness Day by the Government of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver (see below), as advocated by the Two-Spirit Program team at CBRC. Vancouver City Hall will fly the Two-Spirit flag today, along with the trans and pride flags, with all flags being up until March 21.

If you live in other regions of Turtle Island, associate celebrations will also be presented by relative organizations in Edmonton (Edmonton 2 Spirit Society), Saskatoon (2 Spirits in Motion Society and 2Spirit Alliance of Saskatchewan), Toronto (2-Spirited People of the First Nations) Sault Ste. Marie (2S Organizing Committee of Bawating), Lac Seul (Ever Sick! Indigenous Performing Arts & Entertainment) and Whitehorse, Yukon. And in the United States, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors has declared Spring Equinox as Two-Spirit Day of Appreciation and Celebration.

Join in the celebration today and help us get the word out so that Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Celebration and Awareness Day maybe be officially recognized on a national level in the coming years.
