A primer: what governments in Canada need to know about Two-Spirit, trans, gender-diverse, and non-binary health

In Canada and internationally, Two-Spirit, trans, gender-diverse, and non-binary (TTNB) people are facing increased hate and threats to their safety. While TTNB people are working to resist discrimination and advocate for supportive policies, strong leadership from government is needed to dampen the impacts of hate and support better health outcomes for TTNB people.

In 2017, an amendment was made to the Canadian Human Rights Act to protect people from discrimination based on gender identity or expression. This legislation, while critically important, has limited ability to protect TTNB people from hate and violence experienced today. Meanwhile, TTNB people have poorer health outcomes than the country’s cisgender population and face unique barriers to employment, housing, social support, and health services. This primer outlines contextual factors influencing TTNB health in Canada and opportunities for action. Below are specific areas in which advocates are pushing for change, involving action at the municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal levels.
