Salway Hottes, Travis. (2014, October). A Systematic Review of Prevalence of Suicide Behaviours Across Sexual Minority Sub-Groups. Presented at the Gay Men's Health Summit, Vancouver, Canada. The prevalence of suicide behaviours among sexual minorities varies substantially from study to study. Some of this variability may be explained by the context of the study (place and time), characteristics of the sample (age; gender; definitions of sexuality—i.e., whether based on identity, attractions, or sexual behaviours), and methods used (type of sample—community versus population-based; medium for interview—online/in-person/phone). I will present preliminary results from an ongoing systematic review that explores the effects of all of these variables on prevalence of suicide attempts and thoughts among sexual minorities. The objectives of this analysis are to identify sub-groups at greatest risk of suicide and to better understand how the methods we use to study sexual minorities affects what we ultimately measure.
