Canadian census asks about sexual orientation for first time

The census is asking Canadian residents about their sexual orientation for the first time this year. Jad Sinno, CBRC’s Research Director, spoke to Xtra Magazine on what this means for 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities. Read the full article here.

Census data “provides a more comprehensive and fulsome picture in order for us to be able to understand what are the demographics associated with queer populations in Canada… It also allows us to ask more interesting questions about how, for example, various health indicators … or social determinants of health are related to differing aspects of our communities.”

— Jad Sinno, Research Director at CBRC

Collected census data may not capture all 2S/LGBTQIA+ Canadians aged 15+. Our research has shown 1 that many 2S/LGBTQIA+ people are reluctant to disclose their sexual orientation on government-administered surveys.

“We have to recognize that these limitations are going to exist and we must account for those limitations in the interpretation of the data.”

— Jad Sinno, Research Director at CBRC
