Syphilis is on the rise!

Syphilis is a bacterial STI which can result in variable symptoms and sometimes remain asymptomatic for years. While syphilis can be effectively treated, regular testing for syphilis is important. Untreated syphilis can lead to severe complications, including damage to the heart, brain, and other organs.

Over the past decade, syphilis rates have risen dramatically in Canada, disproportionately impacting Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual, and queer men, as well as trans and gender-diverse people (GBT2Q).  More recently, cases of congenital syphilis (syphilis during pregnancy) have also risen significantly, prompting efforts to improve syphilis prevention and testing.

See results from the Syphilis National Consultation Summary conducted by CBRC through consultations and two national knowledge exchange events with community organization staff, healthcare providers, and public health officials across 10 provinces and territories.
