Our Health COVID-19 Community Report : 2S/LGBTQQIA+ Older Adults in Canada

Older adults were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. As of January 2023, more than half (57%) of COVID-19-related deaths in Canada occurred among those who were 80 years old or older, and this group made up 31% of all COVID-19 cases resulting in hospitalization. In addition to the direct threat of illness from the virus, older adults faced a variety of negative indirect impacts during the pandemic. Even before the pandemic, research demonstrated significant loneliness and isolation among 2S/LGBTQQIA+ older adults, and this was likely worsened due to the pandemic. Particularly during lockdown, many older adults also faced a loss of autonomy and mobility. While many people moved to virtual communication during lockdown, including using telehealth for medical care, some older adults lacked the necessary technology or know-how to participate.
