Syphilis is a growing public health concern. In Canada, Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual, and queer men, as well as trans and gender-diverse people (2S/GBTQ+) are disproportionately impacted by syphilis, with infections rising amongst 2S/GBTQ+ people since the early 2000s. Since 2017, syphilis infections in Canada have increased at a faster rate, including increased cases amongst cisgender women and a resurgence of congenital syphilis.
To better inform our response to syphilis, Community-Based Research Centre (CBRC) collected and analyzed data across two 2S/LGBTQQIA+ community-based research studies: Sex Now and Our Health. In partnership with the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE), CBRC held consultations and two national knowledge exchange events with community-based organization staff, frontline healthcare providers, and public health officials across 10 provinces and territories3. This summary document provides a synthesis of data and recommendations from published literature and national consultations.
